[L.A.] Want2BSquare Gallery - An Interactive Exhibit of Box Inspired Art and Media

Since its inception in 2003, Scion, a brand of vehicles catering to Generation Y produced by Toyota Motor Company, has been on the forefront in promoting and engaging creativity either through music, art or both. Scion reached out to seven contemporary artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of their all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle.

These artists were asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48″ x 48″ and 24″ x 24″, which would suspend from the ceiling throughout the gallery. The artworks were displayed at Want2BSquare art shows in New York and Los Angeles. Our Staff Photographer, Saidi Granados, was there in LA to preview these artworks and speak with the artists. - Staff

Want2BSquare Full Installation

Last Friday I visited the Want2BSquare gallery in downtown LA. The showcased artists were Dalek, Sage Vaughn, Maya Hayuk, Matzu MTP, Kelsey Brookes, Freddi C and UPSO. Every artist has a different style and direction but it all happen to fit perfectly with their installation. The concept was to have different sized cubes hanging out from the ceiling filled with the artist’s interpretation. There were big cubes, which contained the artwork inside. You could literally step into the art. Although each artist has a totally different style all of then worked perfectly together.

Dalek

Inside DALEK’s (aka James Marshall) big cube, the creator of the famed Space Monkeys.

Freddi C

Freddi C’s work is so contemporary and graphic. She has her own gallery in L.A. called The Lab 101 Gallery.

Sage Vaughn
These portraits are from Sage Vaughn. My personal favorite is the one with the girl in the red dress.

Sage Vaughn

Another work from Sage Vaughn part of his Wildlife series installation.

Kelsey Brooks
Kelsey Brookes holds a degree in microbiology and his current work as an artist reflects that, very raw and magical.

UPSO

Dustin Amery Hostetler/UPSO does computer-aided art. His work is bold, very emotional and colorful. If you want to see more work of his visit his website below.

Three of the artists, UPSO, Kelsey Brooks and Maya Hayuk were present at the gallery, but we were only able to speak with UPSO and Kelsey Brookes. UPSO explained to us how he got his unique moniker. It actually comes from a project he collaborated on while in college.

Photobooth

The ever-popular photo booth

The show featured a photo booth to take snap pictures of the guests and then those images were projected on one of the walls.
