The Bird and The Bee are an L.A.-based electro-pop duo consisting of producer/multi-instrumentalist, Greg Kurstin, and vocalist, Inara George. Their debut album has a tranquilizing sound with remnants of 60’s soundtracks. The Bird and The Bee are signed on Blue Note’s sister label, Metro Blue, and we are not sure if this is Blue Note/Metro Blue’s next attempt into the soft/pop-jazz territory. The self-titled release certainly does not sound jazzy. Alternatively, it is a mix of tropicalia and lounge-y europop, creating a sweet nectar of cocktail infused sounds that’s not to be found as a background filler at any party.

George (daughter of Little Feat’s Lowell George) does know a thing or two about jazz, given her little mentioned 2005 release of All Rise. She is able to take on anything that Kurstin throws at her with perfection. You know that you have gained a some notoriety when Peaches does a remix of one of your songs. “F-ucking Boyfriend” is by far the standout track becoming last year’s number one dance floor hit.

On “La La La” George is quick with the wit singing “A pretty idiot is kissing/Everyone she doesn’t know/And the pigs are eating popcorn/Selling tickets to the show.” “I Hate Camera” is another danceable number with a pleasant drum beat and tinkle of faux harpsichord .”Because” somehow doesn’t fit well with the album with is R&B lite ways. “Spark” is a southing atmospheric production, a quiet end to a stylistically ambiguous album. The production on The Bird and The Bee is sweet and fans of Stereolab, Brazilian Girls and Broadcast should take note of this savory debut.
