The four-song teaser release of Engine, offers but a glimpse of Langhorne Slim’s range. Produced by Brian Deck (Fruit Bats, Modest Mouse, Iron amp; Wine, Josh Ritter) at Chicago’s Engine Studios, Langhorne Slim, with his pork-pie hat atop his head, joined by his band the War Eagles, is ready to shake you with his brand Americana and alt/punk sound. Leaving Narnack Records to release this EP on V2 Records, Engine starts off with “English Tea,”  which has a ring of a young Dylan with strings. The third track, “Honey Pie,” is a lively rockabilly hoedown that leaves the listener foot-stomping in no time.

Slim acts as storyteller on “Sweet Olive Tree” presenting an emphatic and earnest tale that could be comparable to possibly a M. Ward or Bright Eyes when he sings: “Well if you find someone you love a lot, I recommend you give it everything you got. Either way, you’ll be sittin’, pissin’ in a pot, but at least it will be with someone you love and you trust.” On “Restless,” one of the standout numbers on Engine, Langhorne Slim sings a hooky and folky ditty in his rousing falsetto. More or less Langhorne Slim is ready for a hootenanny but can ultimately dish out those sweet melodious songs and old standards as well. This simple and short offering will keep the rest of us satiated until the release of his full-length in a few months.
